Getting here...
Planes, trains and automobiles
Access is very easy by air, rail and road.
Air travel
The local airport at Nimes is an easy hour away by car, and is served extremely well by
Ryanair. Currently Ryanair flies to 3 destinations
in the UK; Luton, Liverpool and East Midlands.
Slightly further afield at 1hr15mins is Montpellier airport. For UK-based travellers, this is served by Ryanair and British Airways who fly from Gatwick and Heathrow.
Avignon airport, at just over an hour away is currently served by FlyBe, who offer flights from Southampton and Exeter.
Marseille airport is about 1hr45mins drive away. This is very well served by a number of airlines, including BMIbaby who fly from Birmingham.
For travellers coming from North America and other long haul origins, Paris and Nice airport offer excellent hubs for
many global carriers. Both are about 3-4 hours away.
Rail
French rail is excellent, being both fast and punctual. Our local TGV stations are Nimes(40mins by car) and Avignon (45mins by car).
For example, the TGV will get you from Paris to Avignon in just 2hrs38mins and can be booked here
If you're coming here from the UK, you should consider the Eurostar. You can travel from London Waterloo to Avignon in about 6-7hours.
We would strongly recommend that you change at Lille Europe, then you only have to change platform. (rather than Paris where you
have to change stations)
In the summer, Eurostar runs direct trains to Avignon in as little as 6hrs03mins! I believe it will be even shorter after November 2007 as the London terminal moves to St Pancras.
You can even watch a video of someone making that journey here.
Road
Motorways are very good in France, and because you have to pay for them they tend to be much less busy than other countries. Travel time by car from Northern France (for example the Calais ferry terminal)
tends to be about 10 hours, depending on traffic. If you get the chance it's a good idea to break the journey and spend one night in a hotel on the way down.
If you're bringing a bike over, you may well like to consider the Bike Bus. Designed to get UK cyclists and their trusty two wheels from England to
France and beyond. Our nearest stop is Orange, which is about a 50km cycle ride away (route guides available on request)
We've even had some guests cycle all the way from England! (well done Steve and Angela)
